Community Led Conservation

Established in 1992, mara olchoro Conservancy is the first ever conservancy in the maasai mara landscape and stands as one of Kenya’s pioneering community conservancies, dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and the empowerment of local communities. Spanning over 15,000 acres and not far from the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the conservancy plays a crucial role in safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable land use, and enhancing livelihoods through eco-tourism and conservation initiatives. The opposite bank of the river lies the Trans Mara side, where agriculture and livestock farming are prevalent. This proximity often leads to challenges, particularly when maize crops ripen, as elephants frequently raid these farms. Consequently, the conservancy must proactively monitor and seek assistance to guide the elephants back, thereby preventing retaliatory attacks on the animals. on the opposite bank of the river lies the Trans Mara side, where agriculture and livestock farming are prevalent. To the North, the conservancy borders Enoonkishu Conservancy, and to the South Eastern, the majestic Kileleoni Hill dominates the region. Kileleoni Hill, the highest peak in the area, offers a stunning vista. Ascending Kileleoni Hill presents a rewarding challenge, with a less than one-hour walk for a leisurely climber providing magnificent views of the entire Northern Maasai Mara.
